Gordon river wilderness cruise

A cruise on the Gordon river transports passengers to another world & another time

Would loved to have seen this 145 skiers behind the boat on Macquarie harbour

Managed to get on the afternoon cruise, when we turned up this morning there were 3 coach loads of people waiting to board

The boat speeds across the sheltered waters of Macquarie harbour to the evocatively titled
"Hells Gates"
for a sight of the vastness of the Southern Ocean

We went our through the heads, past the lighthouse
AWESOME

3 lighthouse keepers cottages were sold off in 1980's for $8000 each
after the lighthouse was fully automated

Ocean beach on northern side of the heads

Visit to Sarah Island (1823- 1834)

Our guide telling us the stories of Australia's most hellish convict settlement

Sarah Island was closed when they opened Port Arthur

Remains of some of the buildings, it was a very harsh & remote place to live & there were a few escape attempts by the convicts.  Where do you go in a wilderness like this

Our guide is a actor & really made the stories come to life, with her expressions & details of each story about different convicts & their masters

Heritage landing for a boardwalk stroll through the ancient trees

A two thousand old fallen Huon pine giant that still flourishes

Gordon river

Was a cold & miserable day but we enjoyed the cruise & dinner & couple glasses of wine
