One of Tasmanian colony longest running penal institutions, operating from 1828 to 1856, the Cascade Female Factory was the primary site for management & control of female convicts
Two actors acting out the life of a female inmate & the male wearing two hats as the gaoler & doctor
Life was very harsh for the females, just the slightest mistake & they were put into solitary or black hole
Some were sent to work for farmers & gentry, sadly some were badly treated by their employer & they re-affended just to get away from them
Not much left of the buildings these days. Most of the stories we hear about are about the male convicts & the females were forgotten & they certainly had a very hard time of it as well
